Day pursued his education in the common schools, remaining with his father until he attained the age of twenty-one years, when he enlisted for the service in the Civil War, as a member of Company E. Seventy-seventh Ohio Infantry, being mustered out at Brownsville, Texas, in the spring of 1865. He returned home at the close of the war with a creditable military record . . ."
